Our bodies get the energy they need from food through metabolism. Metabolism is the chemical processes occurring within a living cell or organism necessary for the maintenance of life. In metabolism some substances are broken down to yield energy for vital processes while other substances, necessary for life, are synthesized. Metabolism is like a furnace, in that it burns energy and several hormones of the body's hormonal system are involved in controlling the rate and direction of metabolism. Metabolism can be thought of as something that influences how easily our bodies gain and lose weight and that's where calories come in. One of the most important aspects to metabolism is something called the Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). The BMR is the energy required to cover basic bodily functions at rest. It accounts for the majority of the calories that are burned on a daily basis. There are many factors that influence the Basal Metabolic Rate and these include body size, body composition, age, gender, genetics and diet.
Metabolism affects weight because it determines how many calories or how much energy the body needs on a daily basis in order to function efficiently. A person who is considered to have a fast metabolism requires a lot more calories for their body to function than a person who has a slow metabolism. If an individual constantly consumes more energy than what is required of their body to function this can result in them being overweight. Increasing the rate at which the body uses energy is an important part of the weight loss process. The U Weight Loss® program successfully addresses this, resulting in long-lasting weight loss.
